The cost of abortion treatment varies from state to state, and even from city to city in many cases – but in New York the average out-of-pocket cost for an abortion without insurance is anywhere between $249 and $1,100*.
Contributing factors—such as gestational age (the cost of an abortion typically increases as a pregnancy progresses), the type of abortion (medication or surgical), whether your insurance covers abortion, the type of facility (clinic, hospital, or private practice), and whether it’s telehealth or in-clinic care—will determine exactly how much an abortion will cost.

A medication abortion, or the ‘abortion pill’, actually consists of two medications (mifepristone + misoprostol). The first ends the pregnancy, and the second clears your uterus – similar to a miscarriage. These are taken at home (or any comfortable location), over the course of 1-2 days.
Abortion pills are an extremely safe and effective way to end a pregnancy, and can be prescribed in-clinic or via telemedicine – which will affect pricing. Virtual clinics, like Hey Jane, are often able to offer lower prices by not needing to maintain a physical clinic. Additionally, telemedicine may benefit those who would face travel or childcare issues
However, telemedicine treatment may not be the best option for those who prefer in-person treatment, are more than 10 weeks pregnant, or have irregular periods – these will typically cost about $520 in NY (before insurance coverage).
An aspiration (or surgical) abortion involves gentle suction to remove a pregnancy from the uterus, and can sometimes also include cervical dilation. These are exclusively done in clinical settings, and are generally the most expensive option for pregnant people. But in some instances, a surgical abortion may be the best, safest, or only treatment option available. In New York, surgical abortions cost anywhere from $575 - 1,00– depending on the clinic and the gestational age of the pregnancy. Insurance or Medicaid should be able to cover at least some of that cost – and can assist with specific benefits by phone.
Please note: If you have private insurance coverage and are comfortable using it for your abortion, then you may be able to get all or some of your treatment covered. Patients without health insurance in NY may also qualify for emergency Medicaid (depending on their income level). We’ve indicated below which clinics accept insurance.
In New York, it’s legal to get an abortion for any reason up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. However, not all clinics will offer treatment through that date. After 24 weeks, a person may still get an abortion if their health (physical or mental) is at risk, or if the health of the pregnancy is at risk.
New York passed comprehensive abortion rights legislation in 2019, and currently allows for abortion via telemedicine.
Unfortunately, access to reproductive care can sometimes be costly – but there are incredible local funds that can help support people in New York get abortion treatment. If you need help paying for an abortion in New York, one of the abortion funds below may be able to provide assistance. Typically the clinic or provider you choose will connect you with a partner fund, or you can also check to see if you qualify for ‘emergency Medicaid’. Many clinics will even be able to sign you up on the day of your appointment!
The decision to get an abortion—and where—is very personal. But there are a few factors you can consider when looking for a provider, like gestational age cutoffs, pricing, location, convenience, insurance coverage, and reputation. Be wary of crisis pregnancy centers, which are fake clinics.
